After creating internationally acclaimed ‘fagazine’ BUTT in 2001, and, the genre defining gentleman’s style journal, Fantastic Man in 2005, Jop van Bennekom and Gert Jonkers, together with Penny Martin, launched ‘the gentlewoman’ in 2010. The Gentlewoman is a biannual magazine on fashion, which celebrates modern women of style and purpose. This magazine, unlike its mainstream counterparts, is not just mere a catalogue of faces and costumes; instead it showcases real women in the real world wearing their personalities as a style statement - offering a fresh and intelligent perspective on fashion.

ISSUE No. 10

Continuing its trend of audacious and daring women as choice for cover stars – including singer Adele Adkins, 86 yr old Angela Lansbury, fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, international fashion photographer Inez van Lamsveerde and Beyoncé, the gentlewoman’s issue 10 introduces yet another stunning cover featuring the Swedish pop sensation Robyn.

This tenth edition of the magazine features candid and in-depth conversations with some of the most extraordinary women of today, who have earned respect and admiration for their individuality and refusal to conform to the biases in their respective fields – the Scottish broadcaster Kirsty Young; Dutch artist Marlene Dumas; American comedian Kristen Wiig; journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis; and the new face of Japanese fashion, Chitose Abe of Sacai, are amongst them. Unpacking the agenda of the magazine in neat segments – Part 1: Modernisms; Part 2: Profiles and Features; and Part 3: Series, the issue is replete with fashion stories, modern perspective on living and unequivocal substance by way of introduction to fascinating women, all in equal measure.

The Team Behind The Gentlewoman

  • Editor in Chief: Penny Martin

    Creative Director: Jop van Bennekom

    Fashion Director: Jonathan Kaye

Art Direction and Design, Print: Veronica Ditting

There is no dearth of inspiration and wit in this issue and we found ourselves wanting to learn more about the achievements of the fascinating women introduced in this issue – such was the power of the conversational interviews covered by the magazine.

The introduction to Dutch artist Marlene Dumas and journalist Vanessa Grigoriadis left us in awe. The Modern Details (editorial snippets) in between the pages and Modern Manners (the art of hosting parties) made interesting reads, a very clever and ingenious addition to a fashion magazine.

It’s a classic and timeless magazine and a must read for any one who appreciates ambitious journalism and powerful narratives.
