Another Magazine Issue 35

AnOther Magazine Issue 35 is an exploration of fearlessness, the force of the feminine and the power of mothers great and terrible. The thematic is built around Luca Guadagnino’s blood-soaked homage to Dario Argento’s cult horror classic Suspiria and the film’s four female leads – Tilda Swinton, Dakota Johnson, Mia Goth and Chloë Grace Moretz – each feature on the cover of AnOther Magazine. Guadagnino’s Susipria is set in a West Berlin ballet school and, as with the original, has a thinly veiled witches’ coven at its heart.

In her fifth feature film working with Guadagnino, Tilda Swinton plays Madame Blanc the gifted choreographer and ballet teacher at the Helena Markos dance academy – a role she has been discussing with the director for more than 25 years. We talk to the actress about the fellowship of her creative relationships, the ambiguities central to femininity and the history of witch hunts near her home in the Scottish Highlands. Willy Vanderperre photographs her, with styling by Olivier Rizzo, in an exploration of her performative power.

Argento enthusiast Ben Cobb talks to Swinton’s co-stars Dakota Johnson, Mia Goth and Chloë Grace Moretz respectively. Johnson, photographed by Craig McDean, muses on the allure of collective femininity and unconditional maternal love. Goth, photographed by Viviane Sassen, examines her obsession with dancers’ physicality; while Moretz, photographed by Collier Schorr, explores the potential of positive ritualisation and folklore. Each is styled by Katie Shillingford in a portfolio of three uncompromising and individualistic actresses.

This issue, the acclaimed Marc Ascoli joins AnOther Magazine as creative director. Fittingly, we reflect upon the legacy and enduring impact of fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto – whose catalogues, created in collaboration with Ascoli in the Eighties, transformed the world of fashion communication, and whose impact on the industry is still seismic. Talking to Yamamoto and his legion collaborators – from Wim Wenders to Charlotte Rampling and Naomi Campbell – Susannah Frankel examines the threads of humanity and love of women, woven into his clothing. Photographed by David Sims and styled by Katy England on different generations of Yamamoto women, this 32-page portfolio depicts the vast and diverse scope of Yamamoto’s body of work, championing one of fashion’s great masters.

For Art Project, Thomas Demand offers a preview of the latest in his Model Series; in exclusive conversation with visionary architect and former conceptual artist Elizabeth Diller, Demand unpicks his fascination with collective memory, visual vocabulary and the stories told by imperfections.

This issue’s Document is guest-edited by Luca Guadagnino, offering a rare insight to his layered referencing for Suspiria. Between Sigmund Freud’s essay on the uncanny and Victor Klemperer’s analysis of the language of the Third Reich, this selection of texts reveals the auteur’s richly woven tapestry of ideas.

PLUS: Lou Doillon, Dev Hynes, Jake Chapman, Carla Sozzani and others on the influences that have shaped their worlds, shot by Senta Simond and styled by Nell Kalonji.
