Since the last two years the artists duo, Jiten Thukral and Sumir Tagra, have researched and dedicated their work to the issue of farmers’ suicides — their causes and effect on their families, in the state of Punjab. These terracotta bowls were part of the exhibition titled ‘BREAD, CIRCUSES & TBD’ shown at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, UK, aimed to interrogate a larger set of political issues through the act and metaphor of wrestling into the vocabulary of agrarian crisis, where every “farmer is a wrestler”. More about the project here.
7 terracotta bowls were conceived by the duo, in response to uprisings in the agrarian economy, questioning their rights, trials, tribulations, existence and daily survival in today’s world. The bowls correspond to the seven wrestling positions and represents 1 category of issue concerning the farmers. The set of 7 can be bought individually making a full set. Each bowl comes with a small lid.
The proceeds from this box will help support setting up a kitchen run by the families of farmers that have been affected, in order to provide meals for their children.
The fifth of the seven terracotta bowls, Terracotta Bowl Staggered Stance, corresponds to the wrestling position Staggered Stance and represents ‘Environmental Factors’.
